Do Lingual Braces Take Longer?

A patient considering lingual braces options

What Are Lingual Braces and How Do They Work?

Lingual braces share the same basic principles as traditional braces - brackets and wires gradually move teeth into the desired positions. The difference is placement: lingual braces are fixed to the back of the teeth, making them virtually invisible when you smile. The word "lingual" refers to the tongue, because the lingual side of the teeth is the side facing the tongue.

The treatment process feels similar too. Your orthodontist takes impressions of your teeth, maps out the journey they need to take, and your custom brackets are made up in a dental lab.

How Long Should You Expect to Wear Lingual Braces?

Treatment time depends on the type and severity of your case, and whether any prep work is needed first. On average, traditional fixed metal braces are worn for around 18 months to 2 years; lingual braces tend to run for around 18 to 36 months.

So lingual braces are typically worn for a slightly longer period - but again, it varies. Patients with minor issues may opt for faster traditional braces; those who prioritise discreetness through a longer treatment may prefer the lingual route.

Factors That Affect Treatment Length

Several things influence how long any orthodontic treatment takes.

Patient Response

Everyone's body responds slightly differently to orthodontic forces. Some people see faster tooth movement, others need a more gradual approach.

Diligence in Oral Care

Excellent oral hygiene matters a lot. Lingual braces are harder to clean than traditional braces, so they take a bit more effort - and good hygiene helps prevent the complications (like decay or gum inflammation) that can extend treatment.

Appointments and Adjustments

Regular adjustments keep teeth progressing according to the plan. The frequency and precision of adjustments affects total treatment duration.

Technological Advances

Advanced materials and computer-assisted planning have streamlined orthodontic treatment generally. Lingual braces have benefited from these innovations too, and treatment times have improved.

Lingual Braces vs. Traditional Braces

| | Traditional | Lingual | |---|---|---| | Discreetness | Visible metal brackets and wires on the front of the teeth. Colour bands available. | Brackets behind the teeth - virtually invisible. | | Speech | Can affect speech, but less than lingual. | Can affect speech temporarily; usually settles within a few weeks. | | Cost | More affordable - less specialist time and customisation needed. | More expensive - more clinical experience and customisation required. | | Maintenance | Care, diet and cleaning effort needed. | The same plus extra effort to clean the lingual side. | | Treatment Length | 18 to 24 months | 18 to 36 months |

Which Brace Treatment is Right for You?

The right choice comes from a detailed conversation with your orthodontist about your case, your preferences and the practicalities. Both are reliable forms of treatment - neither is "better" in isolation.
