Fixed metal braces are still the workhorse of orthodontics - the most predictable way to achieve precise tooth movements, and usually the most cost-effective fixed option. They remain a popular choice for teens, children and adults at our Sandbach practice.

Metal braces use small stainless-steel brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by a flexible archwire that's adjusted regularly to guide the teeth into their new position. It's the most established orthodontic system there is, with decades of refinement behind it - and still the most predictable route for many cases.
Modern metal brackets are smaller, smoother and far less bulky than the chunky braces parents may remember from their own school days. Combined with gentler wire technology, that means treatment is more comfortable and, in many cases, faster than it used to be - while keeping all of the clinical reliability.
If you'd like the reliability of metal with a softer look, we also offer Iconix champagne-coloured brackets - a warmer, more discreet finish that blends in a little more while keeping all the strength and precision of a traditional fixed brace.
Once the brackets are fitted, day-to-day life carries on much as before. Eating, brushing and sleeping all need a few small adjustments at first, but most patients tell us they stop noticing the braces within a couple of weeks. Sports, music and social life all continue as usual - just with a slightly fuller smile during photos.
Most teens enjoy choosing fresh elastic colours at each appointment - school colours, holiday themes, or simply whatever takes their fancy that week. Adults usually opt for clear or silver ligatures to keep things low-key. Either way, the chance to make the look your own is a small, fun part of the journey.
Metal braces remain one of the most reliable and versatile orthodontic options. Here's what patients tell us they value most.

Your consultation includes an examination, a 3D scan, and X-rays where needed. We'll walk through which teeth are moving where, and may liaise with your dentist if you've had recent fillings or crowns near the bracket sites.
Fitting the braces is a single appointment of around an hour, and we'll give you a small care kit to take home along with a clear explanation of what to expect over the first few days. After that, it's a quick check-in every six to eight weeks to change the wires and keep treatment moving steadily forward.
When your bite's where it should be we gently de-bond the brackets and polish the enamel, then fit your retainer the same visit.
