For a small number of adult patients, orthodontics alone won't quite reach the result they're looking for. When the upper and lower jaws don't align well, combined jaw surgery and specialist orthodontics is the route to a stable, lasting outcome. We plan the orthodontic side and coordinate closely with your surgical team across the whole journey.

Orthognathic surgery - the medical name for jaw surgery - is a planned procedure that repositions the upper or lower jaw (or both) to correct how they meet. It's the right route when the underlying skeletal alignment is the issue, rather than just the position of the teeth themselves.
Treatment is always combined: an orthodontic specialist plans and delivers braces or aligners either side of the operation, while a maxillofacial surgeon performs the surgery itself at a partner hospital. The two halves of the plan are designed to work together, with the same goal in mind throughout.

We handle the orthodontic side of combined cases - the careful pre-surgical preparation that gets your teeth in the right position for the operation, and the fine-tuning afterwards that settles the bite into place. The surgical step is performed by a maxillofacial surgeon we work with regularly, so the planning is genuinely joined-up.
Our orthodontic specialists have years of experience coordinating these longer treatment journeys. We stay your steady point of contact across the whole plan, attending joint review appointments, liaising with the surgical team, and making sure each phase lines up with the next.
When orthodontics and surgery are planned together, the results go far beyond a straighter smile. Here's what patients value most.
Treats cases where the jaws don't align well and orthodontics alone won't fix the issue.
Detailed orthodontic preparation that works hand-in-hand with your surgical team.
We coordinate between you, your surgeon and your dentist so nothing falls between the cracks.
When orthodontics and surgery work together, the outcomes are stable and long-lasting.
Better bite function, better facial balance, and better long-term oral health.
We'll only recommend surgery if it's the right step, and we'll explain why in plain English.

Jaw surgery is rarely quick - the whole journey usually runs two to three years from your first appointment. We start with a consultation, a full set of scans and a joint review with a maxillofacial surgeon at one of our partner hospitals before anything is decided.
If we proceed, phase one is the pre-surgical orthodontics - usually 12 to 18 months of braces or aligners that position your teeth ready for the operation. Throughout, we coordinate closely with the surgical team so the timing of each step lines up.
Phase two is three to six months of post-surgical fine-tuning to settle the bite. When you finish, a retainer protects the result. The surgical team handles the operation; we handle the orthodontics either side and stay the steady point of contact across the whole journey.
