A child's first visit to the orthodontist should feel reassuring, not scary - and rarely needs to end with braces. Our Sandbach team is gentle, patient and used to working with younger smiles, and we explain everything in a way that lands with you and your child.

Children's orthodontics is rarely about jumping straight into braces. For most younger patients, a first visit is a gentle assessment - a look at how the adult teeth are coming through, a check of the bite, and an honest conversation about whether anything needs action now or whether the right answer is simply to monitor and check back in a year or two.
An early assessment from around age 7 is recommended by orthodontists, but it doesn't mean treatment starts then. In most cases, parents leave with reassurance and a clear plan for the next check-in. When early intervention is the right step, our orthodontic specialists will explain exactly why - and how we'll keep it as small and as friendly as possible.
These are the most common moments parents bring a child in. None require a referral, and most don't lead to treatment straight away - a careful assessment is often all that's needed.
The age generally recommended for a first orthodontic check. By now the adult teeth are coming through and we can flag anything worth keeping an eye on.
If a few adult teeth have erupted and look noticeably out of line, a brief look will tell you whether to act now or simply wait.
An obvious overbite, underbite or crossbite is worth assessing - some are easier to guide gently while the jaw is still growing.
If thumb sucking, mouth breathing or tongue habits are continuing past age 6 or 7, we can advise on whether (and how) to intervene.
If your family dentist has mentioned an orthodontic check, come straight in - no referral needed and no obligation to treat.
Plenty of parents come in simply because they'd like a specialist opinion. That's exactly what the consultation is for.

We've built the practice to feel welcoming for younger patients - bright, calm, and a long way from the clinical atmosphere children sometimes worry about. The chair tilts gently rather than dramatically, the scanner looks (and sounds) more like a video game than a medical device, and there's never any pressure to rush.
From the moment your child walks through the door, our team takes the time to explain things at their level. We let them see the equipment, ask their own questions, and feel involved in what's happening - which makes a real difference to how relaxed they are at follow-up visits.
Most children won't need treatment until later, but when the time comes there are two main routes we'll talk you through - both designed around how a younger smile is still growing.
We treat children of all ages from across Cheshire and the surrounding area. Here's what local families tell us they value most.
We see children from age 7 - early enough to spot any developing issues, calm enough that most leave with reassurance rather than a treatment plan.
A calm, welcoming practice where children feel relaxed from the moment they arrive.
We only recommend treatment when it's the right time, with a clear plan and no rush.
Visits planned around school, with longer gaps between check-ins where possible.
Every plan is led by an orthodontic specialist with years of experience in children's care.
Plain explanations for both children and parents, with no pressure either way.

The first visit is a consultation and it's mostly a conversation. We chat through any worries you've noticed at home, take a gentle look in their mouth, and let your child play with the scanner so they feel comfortable. Most younger children leave excited, not anxious.
For many children, the right answer at this stage is simply to keep an eye on things - we'll schedule a brief follow-up in 12 or 18 months and let nature do its work in between. When treatment is genuinely needed sooner, we'll explain exactly what we're seeing and why we're recommending it, so both you and your child feel completely informed.
When treatment does start, we keep visits short and fun - we let your child help pick the colours of their elastics or carry their aligner case in their school bag. Once their new smile is set, a retainer protects it for the long term.
