How Do I Know If My Child Needs Braces?

Trying to work out whether braces are right for your little one? If you're a parent wondering whether your child needs orthodontic treatment, here are some of the most common signs to look out for - all things we discuss with families regularly here at Cheshire Orthodontics.

Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth

Baby teeth usually appear between the ages of 1 and 3, then start to loosen and fall out from around age 6. By around 12 or 13, all the baby teeth should have fallen out and the adult teeth should have come through.

If your child's baby teeth fall out much earlier than expected or stay in much longer than they should, that can be an early signal of oral-development issues that may benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Misaligned Jaw and Improper Bite

If your child's teeth don't meet correctly when they bite down, they may need treatment. Common jaw and bite issues include:

  • Overbite - the upper teeth jut outward and don't overlap properly with the lower teeth.
  • Underbite - the lower teeth project outward and don't overlap properly with the upper teeth.
  • Crossbite - the teeth don't overlap correctly side to side.
  • Open bite - a gap between the upper and lower front teeth even when the mouth is closed.

If you think your child's jaw or bite looks irregular, it's worth seeing a Specialist Orthodontist. Contact us in Sandbach for a consultation to see whether orthodontic treatment is the right next step.

Crowded or Irregularly Aligned Teeth

If your child's teeth are crooked, crowded or overlapping, they may benefit from orthodontic correction. Crowding is often caused by a narrow palate, which can be treated with braces and sometimes a palate expander.

Prolonged Habits Like Thumb Sucking or Mouth Breathing

Some childhood habits can lead to orthodontic issues. Persistent thumb sucking past around age 2 to 4 can cause problems with tooth alignment and oral development. Mouth breathing can also affect jaw development and tooth position.

Problems with Chewing or Biting

If your child has trouble chewing food properly, you may notice food left in the mouth, food falling out while eating, or slow, inefficient chewing. Difficulty biting into food is another common sign.

When deciding whether your child needs braces, the best step is always a consultation with a Specialist Orthodontist. At Cheshire Orthodontics our team has the specialist knowledge to evaluate your child's dental health and recommend the right treatment - or reassure you that one isn't needed yet.

At the first appointment we'll examine your child's jaw growth, teeth alignment, bite and oral health, then talk you through whether treatment is needed and the best time to start.

Orthodontic treatment offers real benefits for children - better teeth alignment, easier chewing, improved oral hygiene and a confidence boost. Our team will walk you through the journey and make sure your child feels supported every step of the way.
