The Role of an Orthodontist
A Specialist Orthodontist focuses on the alignment of teeth, jaws and the surrounding structures. They monitor facial growth, track changes, fit and adjust braces, and look after a range of dental appliances - work that complements general dentistry but goes well beyond it.
Your First Visit and Initial Assessment
Your first visit usually involves a thorough assessment to evaluate your oral health, talk through your concerns, run through treatment options and build a plan tailored to you. The more complex your case, the more frequently you might visit through treatment - usually every 4 to 6 weeks. The type of braces and your age also influence the cadence.
Check-Ups and Adjustments During Treatment
Beyond keeping a close eye on your oral health, your orthodontist also wants to make sure your treatment is on track and your money is well spent.
Braces
Once braces are fitted, ongoing visits cover adjustments and replacements. Depending on the type of braces, your orthodontist will adjust the elastics or tighten the wires to apply the right amount of pressure. These appointments also confirm progress - usually around 20 minutes, slightly longer for adjustment visits.
Invisalign
With Invisalign® you can expect to see your orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks. One of the earliest appointments is dedicated to scans, X-rays and photographs, so allow extra time for that. After your aligners are ready, check-ups follow the same rhythm as fixed braces.
Other Dental Appliances
Expanders and headgear, used in more complex cases, also tend to require check-ins every 4 to 6 weeks.
Aftercare at Home
Between visits, your at-home care does the heavy lifting. Avoid hard, crunchy or sticky foods, brush thoroughly (including after meals), and stick to the hygiene routine your orthodontist recommends.
Retainers
Retainers usually come into the picture after treatment. They're worn as often as your orthodontist recommends - typically continuously for around 4 to 6 months after treatment, then commonly nightly long-term. Periodic retainer reviews are recommended, though not as frequent as active treatment visits.
Growth and Development in Children
For younger patients, growth plays a significant role. Your orthodontist may recommend more frequent visits during periods of rapid growth to make sure the treatment is keeping pace with the jaw and facial development.
